Oops (part 2)

So, we dried out L's phone, and amazingly it seems to work! There are some odd soapy residue thingys, so we may yet have to talk to a camera/phone fixing man to get it sorted. But it works otherwise.
Phew.

How hard - How far...

It's really hard to find software to measure how far you have (or intend) to run. Boo. I've spent longer than I intended to trying to find some software to do this.
I did find a site or two, but until I saw Ben's website which pointed me to Route Ruler which is a fabulous piece of software! Woo!

How hard to set a clock?

We just bought a new microwave. Our old one stopped making things hot. It did all the other (less important) stuff, but not the heating bit.
We can't set the clock on the new one. We even read the manual!

Ooops!

So, this morning I put on a load of washing.
Nothing unusual in that, you may say. However, I forgot to check L's pockets and have inadvertantly washed his phone. Drat.
We're drying it out on the radiator now...
Please, please, please let it be okay.
I'm a baad person. :(

Don't tempt fate

I was looking back over my archive and spotted Broken Bones, a post I made in August 2004. I stated that I had broken no bones (and indeed been in no accidents) since being 20. Pah. Since that post I have fallen down three sets of stairs and cracked my coccyx on one of those occasions. In fact, my first fall was approximately a month after that post...

Moral - don't tempt fate.

Item: complete arty picture for Leon's brithday

I have sucessfully completed this goal. Leon now has a three-panel picture of an American muscle car (the name of which escapes me)

Many Things

Yes, many things have happened which I have not blogged about! So, here we go:

Can you feel it?
I went to see a live gig at local venue Fibbers to see a band called The Feeling. I went there with my usual apprehension, as I'm not a big fan of music that Lint has recommended we see. This has not been the case of late, and in fact both gigs I've been to at Fibbers have been okay at worst. The Feeling were EXCELLENT, a thought lots of people must agree with as they made the Top Ten this week (or last week - whatever).
Their support band Lorraine were a Norwegian Euro-pop group, which was naughtily nice! It's "wrong to like it, but I did" kind of music. All in all, a thoroughly good time.

Driving me round the bend
Leon's finally booked a driving lesson - in fact that's where he is now. Excellent. He's quite nervous, but I'm sure he'll be good. He had lessons before I dragged him up to Yorkshire.

It's a long long way to... Cambridge?
We went to Cambridge (and sutrrounding villages) for the weekend last week. It was nice. Nicer than I had expected too. We saw some (most) of Leon's friends from the area. I enjoyed both evenings out, although Leon didn't enjoy his reaction to whatever-it-was that he ate.
Glen (Leon's best mate) came back from skiing* on the Saturday, so we went round to see his house. I hadn't seen it before. It's pretty nice. Rather blokey, but as it's two blokes living there...

We are family
My family tree research is going quite well. I have tracked back to my mum's mum's mum's mum (my great great grandmother) and possibly found my great grandfather on my dad's side. It's quite fun, actually. When we next go back to Gainsborough we're going to find out where the street that my g.g.gran lived on used to be. We're fairly sure it's not there any more though.

* Why the heck is everyone going skiing these days? It's cold, you might fall off a cliff, you might crash, it snows and is very expensive.

Much Newness!

Many things have happened of late!

  1. I have started to research my family tree. You can see how I'm doing here.
  2. I have been entered into the Race For Life. You can sponsor me here
Okay, so that's all really!

Chip and Pin

I am shocked.
No, actually, the furure over this on changeover day is to be expected if there's no other major news.
We have had about a year to get used to the idea of paying using chip-and-pin rather than signing. Yet on the 13th we were predicted chaos! How are people supposed to remember their pin?
Frankly, those same people call them "PIN Numbers" which is plain wrong.
Can't remember your pin? Change it to something you can remember! Ok, probably not something obvious, but then... Does it matter if I use my birthday if the thief of my card does not know me - how will they know my birthday? I would hope that the people who do know my birthday might not steal my card!
Then the whole thing is made worse by card-cloning at ATMs.
Oh well, at least I'm covered against mis-use of my card. I took up the cover about three years ago when someone used my details to pay their Sky TV Bill and their Gas Bill. Moron! If you're going to use someone else's details, you don't pay for things like that - traceable things! It was good for me, because I managed to get all the money back with no penalties. The Bank were really good about it too.

New Stuff

In about half-an-hour my parents are arriving in a large van. They are bringing us some new furniture. This includes a variety of items:
  1. Wardrobe - double sized, teak.
  2. Wardrobe - one-and-a-half sized, teak.
  3. Table - with 4 chairs, oval, folds up, mahogany
  4. Welsh Dresser - also known as a wall unit - mahogany
So, Leon and I have totally reorganised the bedroom. Ok, I say we, I mean that Leon did all the humping around and I came home from a girly cocktail night and went "ooh".
He's also dismantled our black round table, which we are hoping to sell. I put it on the E-xchange at work, which is a sort of market place online. I got an enquiry almost as soon as it went up, but I fear that the person who enquired might go for the Ikea table also on there, as it's free. I asked for £20. However, I might well put it on again in a few weeks for free if we still didn't get rid of it.

I also have added a new link on my blogs section. It's set apart a little for a reason: the blog-writer is my ex-boyfriend, ex-housemate, ex-coursemate. He's actually quite entertaining to read though. Stig. Of course, we had a slightly rocky time - mainly from me being a bitch in fairness. If I find any other of my uni mates, I'll put them on here too.

Birthday

Yesterday was L's birthday. We went out and did lots of things. Lunch, Cinema, Bowling, Meal. Very nice. I think he enjoyed it. He liked the cake.
Happy Birthday Babe.

I used to be a geek...

While at university I was considered (and considered myself) to be a Geek
Things change and I have discovered things such as nice shoes and going to the pub. This does not detract from my geek status much, but the sad fact is that life seems to be getting in the way of my geek-dom.
So, to make myself feel better I have created myself some up-to-date Geek Code which any geek should find amusing!

-----BEGIN GEEK CODE BLOCK-----

Being Ill and Having No Hot Water

I have been ill since December. I have actually taken some time off work (for the first time ever) to recover, to no avail in both cases. I have therefore had a cough for about a month. I went to see the doctor earlier in the week (after much nagging) who gave me stuff to kill the cough. He also informed me that cough "medicine" only alleviates the symptoms (or not in my case) and so was a waste of time and money. Fab. So the advert where everyone leaves the doctors because they only have a cough is a sham!
On an un-related but annoying note, we have had no mains hot water since some time before the 31st December 2005. This is poor as I like having a bath. The plumber came and fixed it and I am now happy again. And then L fixed the water pressure, making me even happier

Item: Buy Some New Slippers

Has completed successfully.
I'm wearing them now.
I would post a picture of them, but as I don't have a digital camera and my bluetooth dongle is broken, I can't.
They are pink and furry slippers from BHS.
Yes, I was also surprised that they sold anything I wanted in BHS, but I have been surprised by them having what I wanted before too. Like duck-down pillows and control-top tights (for minimising the bits I'm trying to get rid of!)

Also, I have read a new book (i.e. one I had not read before). It is called Ella Minnow Pea. It's a humorous tale told in the form of letters between islanders about some crazy council banning the use of various letters of the alphabet. It apparantly comes down to the phrase: "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" which has all of the letters of the alphabet in it. As apparantly does "Pack my box with five dozen liquor jugs". Fascinating.
I read the whole book last night in the bath.

Banish the 2005-ness of the Blog

Yes, I am finally going to "spring"-clean and sort out my "things to do" list. I did manage to acheive 5 of my 10 "to do"s. Oh well, maybe I'll try to pick some that don't involve waiting for Leon to do things (like the frame/hang picturess stuff) or maybe I should set some other "to do"s for Leon...

So I did:
Buy a house
Go on a weekend city break
Lose weight (although I put all of it back on over Xmas - boo.)
Take up and continue doing weights OR jogging (although I must get back to that now...)
Make a dress

I did not:
Buy cushions
Create and frame a good A3 pastel picture (although I did create one...)
Hang UoW T-Shirt somewhere (I failed this due to Leon not putting up any hooks) Make one of those pretty tops [0.5/1 (disaster, in bin)] Go for 24 consecutive hours without Tea [10/24 during move]

So, what on Earth are my "to do" items for 2006?
Well, I'm trying to be quite optimistic about what I can acheive in the next year. I may extend some of these goals if I feel that they're not challenging enough.
Things to do in 2006:
1. make/buy curtains for the house
Yes, the result of having bought a new house is that I need curtains. I have some curtains downstairs which match the sofa and the table cloth, and the previous owners left blinds and curtains in the front bedroom, a blind in the back bedroom and curtains in the bathroom. Generally I dislike those which were left, and the downstairs ones are a bit blue. So, new curtains needed. Two pairs in the lounge, two pairs in the front bedroom, one pair in the back bedroom and one pair in the bathroom.

2. make/buy cushions (carried over from 2005)
The sofa is uncomfortable. Mainly due to age. We need cushions.

3. complete arty picture for Leon's brithday
I promised Leon I'd give him something special for his birthday, and other than the obvious, this was the best idea. So, I'm making a three-panel picture of one of Leon's favourite cars. In oils on canvass. It's fun and messy. Good.

4. buy some new slippers
You'd agree if you could see/smell my current pair

5. pay off my overdraft
I've been hugely overdrawn since 2000 when I went to uni. It must stop, as it is costing me money!

6. get a hamster
I miss having a pet. I've always had a pet of some kind: Arthur (snail), Goldie (fish), Snowy (rabbit), Sophie (dog), Lightning (rabbit), Pepper (dog), Salt (cockateil). Since moving out of my parents house, though, Pepper and Salt are both sadly deceased and I have no pet. I like hamsters (and mice, rats, gerbils...) and Leon likes them since they don't have those tails

7. learn how to make tea-cakes
I realised today that tea-cakes are one of my favourite bread products. Therefore I plan to learn how to make them (even though they're only about 20p a pack in Tesco)

8. read some new books
I may even join a book club.

9. get Leon to put up some picture hooks
So that I can hang pictures, mirrors and general hangy stuff up.

10. lose weight (again)
I'm still not happy with my weight (mainly as I'm back where I started due to an over indulgent christmas!) so this stays on the list.

Happy New Year!

Yey! Another year to be at the beginning of.
Can we have "Happy February" next month?

Doom

Last night L and I went to the cinema. As there was only Harry Potter and a bunch of other rubbish, we decided to watch the Doom movie.
It was... well - like the game, actually. There was a very basic plot, not too much deep-thinking required. There was plenty of blood, gore, killing and swearing.
There was a moment of aboslute solemnity when The Rock's character found the B.F.G.
If you like Doom the game, and want a short movie which is not demanding (and slighlty amusing in places) then it's alright. The first-person section when the hero John Grimm played by Karl Urban becomes the hero. (I won't tell you why, it ruins the only plot there is)
Amusing, but not taxing.

On My Birthday...

further to the discussion in the pub:
People born on my birthday
  • 1869 Henri Matisse (artist)
  • 1937 Anthony Hopkins (actor)
  • 1943 Ben Kingsley (actor)
  • 1943 John Denver (singer)
  • 1950 John Candy (actor)
  • 1959 Val Kilmer (actor)

Holida-ay!

Yes, at last, I have some time off work to do nothing!
Nothing?
Yes, Nothing.
Well, almost nothing.
I will invariably tidy up a bit, do some painting (as in oil-on-canvas, not Dulux-on-wall) and get myself into town for posting of Christmas Cards to the USA.
I also have to check out packaging for an item which L is selling on E-Bay for a surprising profit.
And check out stuff to buy for some people for Christmas.
And get Mum a birthday card.
Okay, so nothing it isn't, but not work!
Now all I have to so is switch off from all the stuff I have been doing at work, and keep my fingers crossed that the re-emergence of my cold goes away when I have a lie-in.

Disco is too old

So, the Xmas party last night was good. I had a good time for the most part, the food was nice, and good company. Did some dancing, but was dissapointed with the music (again)
Huge were fab, and entertaining!
However, regarding the disco, there was only one girls aloud song played. There were no recent cheesy songs other than that, and yet he played Kaiser Cheifs. Okay, while I like that, it's not disco. Ho hum. No Sugababes, no busted / mcfly / other clones, no Britney, Kylie, Madonna (despite her big no.1 at the mo.) Poor.
