You need to edit your template. (The "Template" tab in the control panel, surprisingly or not) Mine was full of handy "edit this bit if you want to add side bar links" etc comments, and done in a nice OO kinda styleee (CSS and xhtml if the comments at the top of it are to be believed), so even with my very limited (almost zero) experience of web-design I found it relatively easy. The preview button is handy for not needing to re-publish your blog every time to check it works. And if you totally screw up, you can always re-select the template you started with.
